Are you feeling fed up with that pesky gap between your two front teeth? While they’re not uncommon, or even particularly dangerous, a space like this (also referred to as a diastema) can leave us feeling self-conscious about the state of our smile. After all, no one wants to feel like flaws in their teeth are the most noticeable thing about them. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry can help. Continue reading to learn about 2 methods your dentist can use to close the gap!
Method #1: Dental Veneers
Veneers are a versatile treatment often used to address minor imperfections in our teeth like gaps, chips, and discoloration. They’re made of thin shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth which serves dual purposes. It hides aesthetic imperfections in your pearly whites, as well as protects them from potential damage in the future. Your dentist can place your veneers so that there’s no longer a space between your front teeth. Hooray!
Keep in mind that being fitted with veneers happens in stages so it’s not an immediate solution. It’ll take some time and preparation. First, your dentist will have to gently remove a thin layer of enamel (no thicker than a contact lens) from your tooth so the shell will align correctly with your other teeth. Then they’ll take a mold and send it to a lab for your customized veneers to be created, which can take a few weeks.
Although it may take some time, veneers are worth it. If cared for properly, they can last up to 30 years. That means you might not have to see your diastema again in this lifetime!
Method #2: Cosmetic Bonding
Cosmetic bonding is a quick and non-invasive option that’s ideal for minor fixes. It’s a great choice for those who looking for a quick fix for the gap in their teeth! It has become an incredibly popular treatment because it’s so conservative, effective, and affordable.
During this procedure, your dentist will apply a tooth-colored composite resin to your front teeth. This resin has a putty-like quality which can be molded into a perfect tooth shape. Then, it’s hardened into place using ultraviolet light. Finally, your dentist will smooth and polish it so the end result looks and feels like your natural teeth.
If you’re tired of seeing a space between your front teeth, call your dentist. They can work with you to develop a treatment plan that takes your circumstances and needs into account. Then, once completed, you’ll have a perfectly uniform smile to be proud of!
